Speed has become such an integral part of the modern game and since the 2103/2014 the Premier League has been clocking the pace at which players run at to see just how fast todays stars actually travel.
The figures have now been released to show who exactly has been the quickest during the 2017/2018 campaign. As it turns out it’s not just fleet footed attackers who made the top five, and there are a few surprise names that have clocked lighting quick times this season.
5. Antonio Rudiger – Chelsea – 35.19 km/h
Rudiger has done a decent if unspectacular job as part of Chelsea’s three-man defence this season.
We’ll be honest the German international’s pace has never really stuck out when watching him play for the Blues, but perhaps it’s one of the reasons why Antonio Conte demanded that his club forked out £40 million to sign him from Roma last summer.
4. Moussa Sissoko – Spurs – 35.33 km/h
Another surprise name is France international Sissoko, who rarely makes it into any top five lists, unless it’s for the player Spurs fans dislike the most.
Unfortunately for the 28-year-old his touch and passing ability are nowhere the level of his speed, and he is nothing more than evidence that even headless chickens can run really really fast at times.
2. Patrick Van Aanholt – Crystal Palace – 35.42 km/h
Left-back van Aanholt has been one of the most consistent performers in a Crystal Palace side that has been fighting relegation since the early weeks of the season.
The Holland international uses his pace to bomb forward down the left flank and it also comes in handy to cover up for the defensive naivety he shows at times.
The 27-year-old former Chelsea and Sunderland star has actually clocked the exact same time as the next lightning quick full back.
2nd. Kyle Walker – Manchester City – 35.42 km/h
England international Walker has long been renowned for his blistering pace and has used it to great effect to get his side out of some sticky defensive situations over the course of this campaign.
The former Spurs right-back has also used his speed to burst forward and support City’s attacks with great effect all season.
1.Leroy Sane – Manchester City – 35.48 km/h
Sane is in fact, not just the fastest player this season, but the fastest player in the Premier League since records began in 2013/2014.
The pacey winger has an amazing ability to breeze by defenders with the ball seemingly glued to his left foot, all at breakneck speed.
The balance he demonstrates to dribble with the ball at such speed is truly a joy to watch at times, and at just 22-years-old, he looks to have every chance of developing into one of the worlds most devastating attacking players.
