The Spaniard has been a linked with a move to Real Madrid for around four years, famously being close to making the move to the Bernabeu back in 2015. That move would have happened were it not for the infamous fax machine that prevented the deadline day deal being processed in time.
Following the breakdown of that move, de Gea committed his future to the Red Devils, but it has failed to stop the speculation linking him with a move to the Spanish capital.
However, according to The Sun today, the Spanish number 1 is close to agreeing a huge new deal that will see him become the second highest earner at the club, only behind Alexis Sanchez.
They claim that he will sign a bumper five-year deal worth up to £350,000-a-week – a contract made more possible thanks to the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic who completed a move to LA Galaxy last week.
The deal, while not yet complete, is thought to be close, and should be announced before the ‘keeper flies off to Russia for the World Cup.
De Gea has always maintained that he is happy at Old Trafford, with reports in the last few weeks saying he knows that he is appreciated for more in Manchester than he ever would be in Madrid, whose fans get on the back of even the club’s brightest stars, including Cristiano Ronaldo.
