Anthony Martial has put contract talks on hold until he finds out what is happening with Jose Mourinho according to reports.
The France international has a fractious relationship with the Manchester United manager, and it certainly won’t have been helped by Mourinho’s decison to fine the winger £180,000 after he failed to return to United’s pre-season training after attending the birth of his child.
Despite Mourinho’s willingness to allow Martial to leave, the Old Trafford hierarchy was reluctant to allow him to join a Premier League rival, with Chelsea and Spurs among the clubs interested in his services.
Reports last week suggested that Martial was going to sign a new contract, as he was confident that he would outlast his manager, who has come in for increasing amounts of criticism in recent months.
United got off to a disappointing start to the season, losing two of their opening three Premier League games, with speculation suggesting manager Jose Mourinho faced the sack if they had been beaten by Burnley last weekend.
The Red Devils comfortably beat the Clarets, allaying some of the fears surrounding Mourinho’s future, with The Sun now claiming Martial will wait to find out what is going on with the Portuguese coach before making a decision on his own future.
Martial started in United’s shock 3-2 defeat to Brighton, but has not featured since, being an unused substitute at Turf Moor.
