Report claims Emi Martinez ‘likely’ to leave Aston Villa this summer

Emiliano Martinez is reportedly ‘likely’ to leave Aston Villa in the summer, with Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham targeting the goalkeeper.

Martinez has been linked with an exit from Aston Villa following his performances for club and country across the past two seasons, with the 30-year-old having formed part of the Argentina team that won the 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Martinez won the Golden Glove award in both competitions and was named as The Best FIFA Goalkeeper in 2022, leading to speculation he could seek an exit to compete in the Champions League.

TyC Sports are reporting that that scenario is ‘likely’ this summer with Premier League rivals Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham all considering a move for Martinez.

However, a departure would go against Martinez’s previous comments on his situation at Villa, with the goalkeeper having discussed his desire to win trophies at his current side earlier this season.

“I want to achieve something that no one achieves, or it’s been hard to achieve,” he said in an interview on BT Sport podcast, Mike Calvin’s Football People. “And obviously, people were saying, after the Copa America after the World Cup, Emi is going to go and play Champions League and he’s going to leave.

“And I’m thinking, yeah, that’s the easiest part. You know that that’s easy leaving now in January going to a club playing the Champions League and all that.

“It seems everything easy. Actually, it was a real challenge for me. Winning a World Cup for Argentina after 36 years. Yes. Beating the champions of America after 28 years in the Maracana.

“Yeah, that was a challenge. Winning the Finalissima against the champions of Europe was a challenge. And now we need something for Aston Villa after 30 years? I don’t know how long it was. 40 years? That’s a challenge. You know, that’s a challenge.”
