Relegated Middlesbrough star to snub Premier League return despite Liverpool and Chelsea interest

Despite interest from some of the top clubs in the Premier League, Ben Gibson could be set to remain at Middlesbrough ahead of their promotion push next season.

The defender has been one of the clubs shining lights this season, making a series of impressive performances, as well as earning an England call up.

His impressive displays at the back in what has been a disappointing campaign for The Boro have seen him be linked with some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, including Liverpool and Chelsea.

However, with the club preparing for life back in the Championship, Boro boss Steve Agnew believes Gibson will stay:

“He is one of the group and is determined to stay with it and see Boro back to the Premier League.

I don’t think it is inevitable (that he leaves). Ben has signed a new five-year contract during the season and he has had an amazing season.

Ben has shown that he is a consistent Premier League player this season.

I think it’s like any football club in any summer – whatever happens, there’s always going to be movement in any transfer market.

What all the players are under contract and I’m not aware of any interest from elsewhere.

Earlier this week, one of Football Faithful’s Middlesbrough writers Ian Smith explored the reasons for Gibson staying in the North East beyond the summer.

Should Gibson stay? Would he get game time at a top Premier League club? Leave us your thoughts.
