Real Madrid have reactivated their pursuit of Erling Haaland as the club look to sign Manchester City forward.
The Spanish giants have began the groundwork for a potential record-breaking deal in summer 2024, when an alleged clause in Haaland’s contract will reportedly allow him to leave the Premier League side for a fee between €220m and €240m.
Real Madrid are set to offer Karim Benzema a new one-year contract extension for next season and will target a superstar replacement for the Frenchman in 2024. Haaland tops the list for Los Blancos, following an extraordinary debut season in English football that has seen the Norwegian score 42 goals in all competitions to date.
AS are reporting that there is ‘exact knowledge’ at Real Madrid on Haaland’s contract situation, following talks with the forward ahead of his move to Manchester. The European champions were keen on a deal to sign the 22-year-old, but Benzema’s brilliant form – which culminated in the Ballon d’Or in 2022 – prevented a potential transfer.
Real require a long-term replacement for Benzema however, and will push for Haaland next summer. Should he decide against leaving Manchester City, the clause in his contract will remain active for 2025 and 2026.
Real’s interest in Haaland is not understood to impact the club’s long-term interest of Kylian Mbappe. The Spaniards are considering the prospect of signing both Haaland and the Paris Saint-Germain star, who came close to signing for Real last summer before signing a new deal in Paris.
Real believe the expected departures of Benzema, Eden Hazard, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in the coming transfer windows could provide room to finance the wages of both forwards.
