Real Madrid have been linked with making a shock January move for Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata. The reigning Spanish and European champions have had a dreadful start to their title defences this season, currently stirring im third place in La Liga, eight points behind El Classico rivals, Barcelona. They have also only managed to pick up seven points in their four Champions League group games following a draw at home to Tottenham before losing 3-1 at Wembley to Pochettino’s men in the return fixture.
Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is coming under increasing pressure at the Bernabeu due to the down turn in results, possibly prompting the Frenchman to try to spend his way out of trouble.
According to the Daily Express, one player on his list of potential targets is Manchester United’s Juan Mata.
The Spaniard, who came through the ranks at Real Madrid before on to Valencia, has just over six months remaining on his current deal at Old Trafford. He was totally left out of the Match day squad for last weekend’s defeat to his former club Chelsea, and was an unused substitute in the previous week’s victory over Tottenham.
His future has always been in doubt since Jose Mourinho’s arrival at the Old Trafford, with the Portuguese being the manager to sanction his £37.5m departure from Chelsea, despite being the club’s two time player of the year.
It is claimed that Mourinho could be willing to listen to offers for the 30-year-old in January, rather than leave the club on a free next summer. Despite spending almost £300m on the squad in the last 18 months, the former Real Madrid boss is still not happy with his squad, but could be forced to sell before he is allowed to spend any more.
