Rangers vs Aberdeen – Match preview and team news

Rangers host Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership on Tuesday night, with the Ibrox side looking to continue their resurgence under Danny Rohl.

The Gers have found their form in recent weeks and will be aiming to close the gap on league leaders Hearts.

Rangers vs Aberdeen – Match preview and team news

  • Date: Tuesday, 6th January.
  • Kick-off: 8pm BST.
  • Venue: Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow.

Rangers team news

Rangers manager Danny Rohl is expected to keep faith with the core of the side that secured an impressive victory over Celtic in the Old Firm derby. The German boss has no fresh injury concerns following the weekend’s triumph but remains without several key players. Bailey Rice, Derek Cornelius, Nedim Bajrami, and Oliver Antman are all sidelined due to injury problems.

Centre-back Nasser Djiga is also unavailable, with the defender currently on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations. In his absence, John Souttar and Emmanuel Fernandez are likely to continue their partnership in the heart of the defence. Midfielder Mohamed Diomande, who made a significant impact off the bench against Celtic, could be handed a start in place of Thelo Aasgaard as Rohl looks to freshen up his midfield.

Aberdeen team news

Jimmy Thelin’s side is also facing an injury crisis as they look to arrest their slide down the table. The Dons are currently sweating on the fitness of midfielder Adil Aouchiche, who is a major doubt after limping off with a knock in the first half of the recent defeat to Falkirk. Gavin Molloy and Kristers Tobers have been ruled out through injury, further depleting Aberdeen’s defensive options.

There could be a recall for experienced midfielder Sivert Heltne Nilsen, who may come into the side to partner Stuart Armstrong in the engine room. In attack, Kevin Nisbet is expected to lead the line, supported by a creative trio of Kenan Bilalovic, Jesper Karlsson, and Topi Keskinen, as the Dons look to improve a goal return that has seen them score just 20 times in 20 league games.

Form

Rangers

After a turbulent start to the 2025-26 campaign under former boss Russell Martin, Rangers have steadied the ship significantly since Danny Rohl’s arrival. The Ibrox club have won nine of their 12 league games under the German, including their last three on the bounce. Tuesday’s hosts come into this clash fresh from a morale-boosting 3-1 win over Celtic, a result that moved them level on points with their city rivals and within six points of surprise league leaders Hearts. Defensively, they have been solid, conceding just 17 goals in 20 matches, the joint second-best defensive record in the division alongside Hearts.

Aberdeen

In stark contrast, Aberdeen are in the midst of a crisis. The Dons are winless in their last five matches across all competitions, a run that includes four defeats and a solitary draw. Their struggles were compounded by a loss to Sparta Praha in the Conference League, and their domestic form has left them languishing in eighth place, 13 points adrift of the top three.

Thelin’s men have won just one of their last seven meetings with Rangers and have struggled for consistency all season. With a negative goal difference and confidence low, the trip to Ibrox presents a daunting challenge for a side that has picked up just 25 points from their opening 20 fixtures.

Predicted lineups

Rangers: Butland; Sterling, Souttar, Fernandez, Meghoma; Barron, Raskin, Diomande; Gassama, Chermiti, Moore.

Aberdeen: Mitov; Devlin, Milne, Knoester, Shinnie; Armstrong, Nilsen; Bilalovic, Karlsson, Keskinen; Nisbet.
