While we have recently written a lot about Premier League stars missing out on this summer’s World Cup after not being selected by the likes of England, France and Spain, Belgium have selected a team full of Premier League talent.
Despite being one of the smaller nations in the tournament, Belgium have produced some sensational players in recent years, making them one of the favourites to lift the famous trophy in Russia in July.
Within their squad, there is no less than 12 Premier League stars that have been named in Roberto Martinez’s 23 man World Cup squad.
The former Wigan and Everton boss has selected three goalkeepers in his squad, including Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois, and Liverpool’s Simon Mignonet while Newcastle’s Mats Selz misses out.
In the Belgian defence, Spurs duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are joined by Man City captain Vincent Kompany, despite him picking up yet another injury recently.
In midfield, one man who absolutely will be lighting up the tournament is Man City star Kevin de Bruyne, who has had a phenomenal season for the champions this season. Elsewhere, FA Cup hero Eden Hazard is also an unsurprising inclusion, and he is joined by Spurs star Moussa Dembele and Man Utd contract rebel Marouane Fellaini.
There was also an inclusion for former Man Utd winger Adnan Januzaj, who is now plying his trade in La Liga with Real Sociedad.
The attacking options have a very familiar feel for regular viewers of the Premier League, with Romelu Lukaku, Michy Batshuayi, Christian Benteke and Nacer Chadli being entrusted to score the goals for the Red Devils this summer.
Amazingly though, there was no place in the squad for Roma’s Radja Nainggolan, with Martinez citing his exclusion being due to ‘tactical’ reasons.
