Former Newcastle and England striker Alan Shearer has hit out at Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho for his comments after his side lost 1-0 at St.James Park on Sunday.
Writing in his BBC column the Premier League’s all time leading goal scorer disagreed with the Portuguese coach for stating that the Geordies had been lucky and had played for a draw, when he said:
”Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was totally wrong when he said Newcastle played for a draw and relied on luck to beat his side on Sunday.”
”Rafa Benitez’s side thoroughly deserved their win because they defended better than Manchester United, they dominated midfield and they did what United could not do, which was score.”
Newcastle’s win was much needed, with the three points seeing Rafa Benitez’s men climb to 13th in the Premier League table as they look to avoid relegation back down to the Championship.
United remain in second after their loss, although only two points now separate them from Liverpool in second and Spurs in fifth.
