Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are all said to be monitoring Schalke’s 22-year-old midfielder Leon Goretzka according to a report in the Mirror.
Goretzka is seen as one of the hottest talents to come through the German system in recent years, which is really saying something. Peter Neurerer, his coach at VfL Bochum, the club at which he started said he is “the talent of the century” and six goals in just 12 appearances for the National side would seem to back that up.
Goretzka has everything in his locker, he can score from distance, is good in the air, can dictate the game from either an advanced or deep lying role and even has the pace to play out wide.
He would be a superb addition to any squad and while Liverpool had been early favourites to land Goretzka, Manchester City have now entered the race for his signature. The Citizens see him as a replacement for Yaya Toure who is set to leave next year and Fernandinho who turns 33 this year. His versatility would be perfect for the near total-football Pep Guardiola has brought to the Etihad.
Goretzka’s contract with Schalke ends in the summer so the German club would be keen to get a fee for the star player in January rather than lose him on a free once his contract is up. If it comes down to a bidding war it’s hard to imagine City losing out though Bayern Munich are also said to be interested.
