Premier League Awards – Terrific Thiago, Reed’s rocket

Our Premier League awards honour the best – and worst – of the weekend action, featuring Arsenal’s title race lead and Harrison Reed’s rocket.

Moment of the Week

Is this the moment that swings the title race irreversibly in Arsenal’s favour? After The Gunners had beaten Bournemouth to extend their lead at the top of the table, Arsenal received a last-gasp favour from London rivals Chelsea.

Enzo Fernandez bundled in a 94th-minute equaliser for managerless Chelsea at Manchester City, a result that leaves Arsenal six clear at the summit, after consecutive draws for the Citizens.

Arsenal have been down this road before, but there’s a growing feeling this season might just be different.

A clash with champions Liverpool in midweek could be a passing of the torch.

Player of the Week

Brentford’s recruitment team needs to be studied when it comes to signing strikers.

The Bees helped in the development of Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney from Football League forwards to England internationals, while Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa joined as unknown quantities before being sold for a combined £127m last summer.

Now, it’s the turn of Igor Thiago. The Brazilian’s first season was decimated by a long-term knee issue but he’s making up for lost time now.

Thiago tormented Everton on Sunday, scoring a hat-trick as the Bees ran riot at Hill Dickinson Stadium. He’s never been capped by Brazil at any level but he’s making a strong case for a World Cup spot.

Goal of the Week

The Goal of the Week and, quite possible, the goal of the season. Harrison Reed had scored just three goals in his previous 126 Premier League appearances and none since April 2023.

On as a late substitute for Fulham this weekend, Reed had just two touches. One to set himself, and another to score this stunner. Goals of any kind, never mind 97-th minute equalisers, don’t come much better.

Stat of the Week

Nuno Espirito Santo is often cited as a defensive manager, but the tactical traits he’s built a reputation on have deserted him of late.

The Portuguese coach appears on the brink at WestHam, after his side’s 3-0 loss at previously winless Wolves.

Nuno has now gone 26 games without a clean sheet across spells at Nottingham Forest and West Ham. He needs to get back to basics – and quickly.

A week to forget for…

David Moyes. Each time Everton appear to be gaining some momentum, there’s a setback few saw coming.

After an impressive away day at Nottingham Forest in midweek, the Blues were beaten badly by Brentford on home soil.

The manner of the loss will feel all too familiar for Moyes, following comprehensive reverses against Newcastle and Tottenham at Hill Dickinson earlier in the campaign.

Moyes is working with a threadbare squad, but he will feel let down by senior names. James Tarkowski and Michael Keane in particular had no answer for the outstanding Igor Thiago.
