Portugal are set to host Hungary at Estádio José Alvalade this Tuesday in a pivotal FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying match.
The Portuguese side leads Group F with a perfect record after three games, while Hungary currently sits second with four points from the same number of matches.

Portugal face a significant setback, as Paris Saint-Germain midfielder João Neves has been ruled out with a thigh injury. This is the same injury that has kept him sidelined at his club. Although he was initially called up, subsequent medical checks confirmed he isn’t fit for international duty. As a result, the team have called up Lazio’s Nuno Tavares as a replacement.
In another change, manager Roberto Martinez has also sent AC Milan winger Rafael Leão home. The decision came after Martinez evaluated Leão’s fitness following his substitute appearance against Ireland. Indeed, the winger is still recovering from a calf injury from August, and the manager deemed him unprepared for another match at this stage.
The defence is also affected, as veteran João Cancelo remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, forcing Martinez to reconsider his lineup. However, on a positive note, Nélson Semedo is back. He could make his first international appearance in over a year after recovering from his knee issues.
With these changes, midfielders Matheus Nunes and the rejuvenated Pedro Neto are expected to play key roles. In fact, Neto will likely start on the wing to fill the gap left by Leão’s absence.
