Pochettino insists he is happy with Spurs performance despite ‘cruel’ Inter Milan defeat

Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that he is happy with Spurs performance in their opening Champions League game, describing their 2-1 defeat to Inter Milan as ‘cruel’.

The Premier League side took the lead through a Christian Eriksen strike early in the second-half, and were still in the lead as the game edged into the 85th minute.

However, Spurs were left stunned as Mauro Icardi and Matias Vecino struck late on to give the Nerazzurri a vital three points in their first Champions League game since 2012.

The defeat at the San Siro now means that Mauricio Pochettino’s men have lost three games on the spin, but despite that fact, the Argentine doesn’t feel like that the most recent defeat was a deserved outcome:

“I’m happy with the performance – we dominated until the end – but of course the result was so cruel. For me it was our best performance since the beginning of the season,” Pochettino told BT Sport.

“I’m happy with the performance but annoyed because I think the players and team deserved more.”

“I believe that you can only fix that [Spurs’ form] by working, and working harder than before. There’s no other way. The last few games we’re paying a lot and suffering the punishment for our mistakes. That is football – keep working and try to prepare the next game.”
