PFA chief defends Cole Palmer amid concerns over football calendar

Cole Palmer's decision to withdraw from the latest England squad has reignited the debate over the demands being placed on elite footballers, with PFA chief executive Maheta Molango arguing that the Chelsea forward is a victim of an overloaded calendar.

Cole Palmer’s decision to withdraw from the latest England squad has reignited the debate over the demands being placed on elite footballers, with PFA chief executive Maheta Molango arguing that the Chelsea forward is a victim of an overloaded calendar.

Palmer was one of five players to pull out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad before the latest Nations League fixtures, alongside Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento. Palmer’s withdrawal was attributed to load management, prompting Tuchel to say the forward was missing “too many opportunities” to play for England.

Molango offered a different perspective while speaking at the FIFPRO and Cleveland Clinic Peak Performance & Health Summit in London. He argued that players can be committed to international football while still reaching a physical limit.

“When England see five players who need to withdraw when the single most proud moment a player has is to be called up for the national team, you just ask yourself, what’s wrong about the industry?” Molango said.

He singled out Palmer, highlighting the demanding sequence of international tournaments facing the Chelsea attacker.

“You see people like Cole Palmer, someone who would have played four consecutive summers in a row had he gone to the World Cup,” Molango said, describing him as a “victim of the calendar”.

The PFA chief also rejected the suggestion that withdrawals necessarily reflect a lack of commitment to international football.

“They love to play for England. They love to play for their national team. But unfortunately your body puts a limit to it. You cannot cheat biology,” he said.

Molango argued that the problem extends beyond England, pointing to recent international absences involving Germany’s Kai Havertz, Netherlands forward Brian Brobbey and France captain Kylian Mbappe. He described the wider system as “sick” and warned that the increasing demands could prevent supporters from seeing the best players perform consistently.

The PFA and FIFPRO have repeatedly raised concerns about workload and recovery time. Earlier this year, FIFPRO highlighted players facing schedules of more than 70 matches and called for minimum periods of rest and preparation.

Molango wants players to receive a mandatory three-week summer holiday followed by three weeks of retraining. Premier League chief football officer Rebecca Caplehorn said the league supports the principle but acknowledged that the current calendar makes such a six-week period impossible without wider regulatory and scheduling changes.

The debate therefore extends beyond Palmer’s England absence. His withdrawal has become another example in an increasingly prominent dispute over how much football elite players can reasonably be expected to play.
