Palace in talks to sign ex-Arsenal defender Tomiyasu

Crystal Palace have opened talks with former Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu over a permanent move, with the Japan international training alongside Pierre Sage’s squad as he looks to secure a return to the Premier League.

Tomiyasu was named on the bench for Palace’s pre-season friendly against Lens on Tuesday as discussions over a free transfer continue. BBC Sport reports that a broad agreement on personal terms is already in place, although the move remains dependent on Palace being satisfied with the defender’s fitness.

The 27-year-old left Arsenal by mutual consent last season before joining Ajax, where he made eight appearances towards the end of the campaign. However, a series of knee injuries have disrupted his progress in recent years, prompting Palace to assess his condition closely before making a final decision.

Despite those concerns, the Eagles are convinced of Tomiyasu’s quality and versatility. Sage is expected to use a back three this season, with the Japan international viewed as a potential option on the left side of central defence.

Palace’s search for defensive reinforcements has intensified following the expected departure of Maxence Lacroix, who is closing in on a move to Chelsea. The club are therefore exploring several options before the transfer window closes.

Alongside Tomiyasu, Palace remain in talks with Augsburg over a deal for centre-back Chrislain Matsima after making at least one offer worth around €30 million (£25.7 million). They also retain an interest in Chelsea youngster Josh Acheampong, although there is no indication the Blues are willing to sanction a loan move for the 20-year-old.
