The Dutch defender spent the season on loan in the Potteries last season and had been expected to make a the move a permanent one this summer. They had an option to sign the defender but that expired on the 1st July, meaning they will have to negotiate with every other club to acquire his services.

Crystal Palace are now believed to have agreed a fee with the Portuguese club to sign the 25-year-old, where he would join up with fellow countryman Frank de Boer who has recently been installed as the new manager of the Eagles.

Crystal Palace were thought to be interested in re-signing Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho, who spent last season on loan at Selhurst Park, helping to steer the club clear of relegation.

However the French man produced such excellent form for Palace last season, prompting Liverpool to reportedly want £30m for his services.
