After months of speculation, Mesut Özil could be about to make an astonishing U-turn and sign a new deal at Arsenal.

The German playmaker has just nine months remaining on his current contract at the Emirates, meaning that he would be able to leave the club on a free transfer next summer.

However, despite Ozil’s contract situation being widely known, and the players undoubted quality, no clubs have come forward to with the intention of paying his extortionate wage demands.

Manchester United have been linked with making a move for the 28-year-old, with the player thought to be keen on working with Jose Mourinho once again, the pair spent three years working together during their respective times at Real Madrid, before the German became Arsenal’s club record signing back in 2013.

Özil is Arsenal’s highest earner and currently earns £150,000-a-week, but has refused to sign a new deal as he looks to double his money with wage demands of £17m a year, a fee which no club is willing to match.

According to The Sun, the embarrassing situation could see the player agreeing a new contract at the Emirates.

Speaking to media in Turkey, Mesut Ozil’s agent also confirmed that talks with Arsenal are ongoing:

“Talks with Arsenal are ongoing regarding a new deal.

“What I can say right now is that negotiations are going well. Ozil wants to play another 2-3 years in the Premier League.”
