Osimhen top target for PSG ahead of Mbappe exit

Napoli forward Victor Osimhen is near the top of Paris Saint-Germain’s shortlist of potential replacements for Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe has confirmed that he will leave the Ligue 1 champions when his contract expires at the end of the season, bringing an end to a lengthy saga surrounding his future.

The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a free transfer move to Real Madrid, while Liverpool are among the Premier League clubs also monitoring his situation.

Mbappe is PSG’s record goalscorer after scoring 243 goals in 290 appearances to date for the French side, ending the last five consecutive campaigns as Ligue 1’s leading scorer.

PSG are now assessing the market to sign an elite replacement for the France captain and Osimhen is understood to ‘feature prominently’ on the club’s shortlist of candidates.

The Nigerian has scored 67 goals in 119 games for Napoli and was Serie A’s leading scorer as the club won a drought-breaking league title last season.

Osimhen was named as Serie A’s Most Valuable Player for his performances and also claimed the African Footballer of the Year award.

The 25-year-old has a reported release clause of around £130m in his contract in Naples and discussed his future earlier this month, admitting he had already made a decision.

Several Premier League sides, including Arsenal and Chelsea, have been named as suitors for the forward and PSG’s interest could complicate English hopes of reaching a deal.

Osimhen previously played in France for Lille, where he scored 18 goals in all competitions during a single season with the club before signing for Napoli in a €70m deal.
