Ollie Watkins has hailed the feeling of winning the Europa League with Aston Villa as ‘indescribable’.
Aston Villa ended a 30-year wait for a major trophy after beating SC Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.
Youri Tielemans volleyed Villa ahead with a brilliant opener, before Emi Buendia added another stunning strike to double the lead before half-time.
Morgan Rogers steered in from close range to make it three in Istanbul as Villa comfortably dispatched the Bundesliga side to win a major European trophy.
For Watkins, it’s the first trophy of his career and the England international praised an unbelievable final performance from Unai Emery’s team.
“Amazing,” he said. “To perform like that was unbelievable. I felt like we really controlled the game and we punished them in the end.
“It’s an unbelievable experience. Look at this, it’s what you dream of. Sometimes you have ups and downs, but we pulled through in the end. We pushed on, got Champions League football, and now this. So special, all these fans. Indescribable.
“I’ve watched many a cup final and I think set pieces are crucial. Until then, it was a little bit cagey. We did have a few opportunities, the game was open, they were going man for man.
“We worked an unbelievable set-piece, and fair play to Austin (MacPhee). We left four up on the corner, we just scored, 1-0.
“He (Emery) was really calm today in the build-up. Sometimes, in the league games he’s a little bit anxious because he obviously wants us to win.
“But today he was really calm, and I think that set the tone for us boys.”
