Newcastle United announced earlier today that they have activated a clause in Mikel Merino’s loan deal from Borussia Dortmund to sign him on a permanent basis.
The Spanish U21 international has been causing quite the storm at Newcastle United this season and is already a fan favourite.
Merino, 21, will sign for the Magpies for an estimated fee of £5 million. Which many Geordies will feel is an absolute steal considering his performances for United this season.
Merino’s has been instrumental in Newcastle’s good form at the start of the season particularly impressing in the wins against West Ham and Swansea City.
The news comes after Merino’s impressive performance against Slovakia U21’s where he scored a brace and picked up a man of the match performance for Spain’s youngsters.
Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez had this to say about Merino’s permanent signing
“I’m really pleased that we have been able to bring Mikel to the club permanently… He has made quite the impression at the club.”
Newcastle will hope Merino continues his good form on Sunday when they take on Southampton at St Mary’s.
