Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle United — Match preview and team news

Nottingham Forest return to the City Ground on Sunday looking to put their bruising Europa League semi-final exit behind them.

A 4-0 defeat at Villa Park ended their continental dream, leaving domestic survival as the sole remaining priority for the 2025-26 campaign. Despite that European heartbreak, the Tricky Trees are in excellent Premier League form, currently riding a seven-game unbeaten streak.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United, meanwhile, arrive in the East Midlands looking to build on a rot-stopping 3-1 victory over Brighton that moved them to the verge of safety.
One point from their final three games will mathematically confirm Newcastle’s top-flight status for next season. That said, the Magpies have struggled significantly on the road this year, losing four of their last five away fixtures.

Historically, however, the City Ground has been a fruitful destination for the visitors — Newcastle remain unbeaten in seven Premier League trips to Trentside. Forest, for their part, have won just one of their fifteen Premier League meetings with Newcastle, a statistic they will need to improve to avoid a nervous conclusion to their season.

Team news

Nottingham Forest

Vítor Pereira took a depleted squad to Villa Park on Thursday and remains unsure if his regular starters will return in time for Sunday. Morgan Gibbs-White, Murillo, Ibrahim Sangare, and Dan Ndoye all returned to the bench in midweek but saw little to no action. Pereira later clarified they were primarily there as “cheerleaders” and might not be ready for the Magpies. That said, Taiwo Awoniyi and Luca Netz are available for selection on Trentside. Callum Hudson-Odoi, John Victor, and Willy Boly remain sidelined.

Newcastle United

Eddie Howe will be without Lewis Miley for the remainder of the season after the young midfielder fractured his fibula in training. Tino Livramento and Fabian Schär are also unlikely to feature again this term. Kieran Trippier is poised to return to the starting XI after Miley’s injury shifted defensive options. Will Osula, who has scored four goals in his last six league games, is expected to start after being praised for his recent performances.

Form

Nottingham Forest

The hosts have been free-scoring of late, netting three or more goals in three consecutive league fixtures. This offensive surge included emphatic victories over Sunderland, Burnley, and Chelsea. Before their recent loss to Chelsea, they had racked up thirteen goals across four league games. A victory on Sunday would represent consecutive home league wins for the first time in over a year.

Newcastle United

Newcastle have endured a difficult 2026, losing nine of their sixteen Premier League matches so far this calendar year. Only relegated Burnley has suffered more losses in the same timeframe. Their victory over Brighton last weekend snapped a worrying four-game losing streak. However, their away form remains a concern, with six of their last nine matches against English teams resulting in failures to score.

Predicted lineups

Nottingham Forest (4-2-3-1): Sels; Cunha, Milenkovic, Morato, Williams; Anderson, Yates; Hutchinson, Gibbs-White, Ndoye; Awoniyi

Newcastle United (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Burn; Tonali, Guimaraes; Barnes, Willock, Joelinton; Osula
