Liverpool legend blasts Klopp for Napoli showing

Former Liverpool defender, Steve Nicol, was not happy with his old team’s performance in Italy on Wednesday night.

Liverpool lost 1-0 in to Napoli thanks to a late strike from Lorenzo Insigne. It was no more than the Italian side deserved after they bossed the second half of the game.

Nicol, who made 468 appearances for the Reds, was clearly not happy with Jurgen Klopp’s game-management for the Champions League defeat.

“The second half was all Napoli,” Nicol said on ESPN FC.

“I understand Klopp’s philosophy about opening it up and playing regardless of whether you’re home and away.

“But there comes a time where you have to change and he doesn’t change anything. But you persist in having three forwards up front.

“You’ve got [Sadio] Mane on one side, [Mohamed] Salah on the other and [Roberto] Firmino in the middle.

“Napoli are streaming through the middle of the park getting at the back four and you could see it coming.

“If we can see it coming why can’t Klopp see it coming? At least get Mane and Salah to tuck in and help the full-backs.

“It’s a shame because a 0-0 result would have put Liverpool in pole position to qualify.”

Napoli’s win really opened up the group and it’s all to play for between PSG, Liverpool and the Italian side, now. Liverpool’s next two Champions League games are against Red Star Belgrade, the weakest team in the group.
