Newcastle’s Saudi owners want to sign Neymar as a ‘marquee’ signing

Newcastle’s ownership are interested in a deal to sign Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain as the club target a ‘marquee’ arrival this summer.

Eddie Howe’s side are closing in on a top four finish and Champions League qualification after an impressive season and the club’s Saudi Arabian owners want to build on that success with a headline arrival.

90min are reporting that Neymar is under consideration with the forward’s future at PSG in doubt. The 31-year-old could be allowed to leave this summer as PSG look to rebuild, with the superstar signings of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in recent seasons having failed to lead to Champions League success.

PSG are aware that only a handful of clubs would be able to afford Neymar, who signed for the Parisians in a £198m world-record deal from Barcelona in 2017. He is among the highest-paid players in world football.

It is understood the Newcastle board will not force a signing into the squad without Howe’s approval, but there is a sense that Neymar could prove to be a ‘relatively natural fit’.

Newcastle are keen on signing a left-sided forward this summer and the presence of Brazil teammate Bruno Guimaraes and compatriot Joelinton could aid his adaptation at St James’ Park.

It is believed PSG would want a fee of around £75m for Neymar, who has scored 118 goals in 173 appearances for the club.
