Newcastle United travel to Manchester on Boxing Day looking to find some consistency.

Eddie Howe’s side surrendered a two-goal lead against Chelsea last time out to draw 2-2. Currently sitting 11th in the table, they need a win to close the gap on the teams above them. The Magpies enjoyed great success against Manchester United last season, completing a league double.

However, they have not won back-to-back league games at Old Trafford since 1935. With the hosts missing key players, Newcastle will view this as a prime opportunity to rewrite that history despite their own defensive issues.

Newcastle United team news

Eddie Howe is hoping for a massive boost in goal. Nick Pope has a “chance” of returning from a groin injury to replace Aaron Ramsdale. However, the defence remains decimated by injuries. Dan Burn, Tino Livramento, Kieran Trippier, and Sven Botman are all unavailable.

This crisis means Lewis Miley could be asked to fill in at right-back again, with Lewis Hall on the left. In midfield, Joelinton is battling to be fit but is expected to start alongside Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali. Up front, Nick Woltemade is the danger man. The German has seven league goals in his debut season and is expected to lead the line, flanked by Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon.
