Newcastle United look to register their first win under Matthias Jaissle when West Bromwich Albion visit St James’ Park on Wednesday, three days after a 2-2 draw with Liverpool in which Dominik Szoboszlai’s stoppage-time penalty denied the Magpies victory.
It is Newcastle’s first fixture of the season in a competition they won in 2024-25 to end a 70-year trophy drought.

William Osula should be fit to feature after picking up a knock to his ankle against Liverpool. Jaissle has been open about managing fatigue across his squad, saying: “We have many players who are exhausted and some have minor injuries, so we need to see. We will make a decision when we get together on the team selection.”
Jaissle is expected to weigh up whether to pair Osula with Yoane Wissa up front, or hand Nick Woltemade his first start of the campaign. Joe Willock could be rewarded with a midfield start after scoring as a substitute against Liverpool, while £43 million signing Bazoumana Toure will hope to make his full debut in attack, potentially at the expense of Anthony Elanga or Harvey Barnes.
A reported deal to sign midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City remains unconfirmed in terms of timing, and it is unclear whether he would be available for selection even if completed before kick-off.
