The manager’s selection headache is compounded by late fitness calls on Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento. Gordon (hip) and Livramento (knee) have both returned to training and are “very close” to a return, but Howe admitted they remain “touch and go” and will require late checks before a decision is made.
On a more positive note, goalkeeper Nick Pope has trained without issue and is available for selection after recovering from the head injury that forced him off against Brentford. However, the game comes too soon for forward Yoane Wissa. The summer signing remains unavailable as he undergoes a “pre-season” style conditioning programme with the sports science team, with no definitive return date set.
