Newcastle have made enquiries into the availability of Chelsea duo Billy Gilmour and Tammy Abraham on loan.
Steve Bruce’s side are prioritising loan moves this summer amid a restricted budget at St James’ Park and have made an approach to Chelsea over the availability of both Gilmour and Abraham.
Gilmour is expected to be loaned out this season to continue his development with the teenager facing strong competition for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s midfield, the 19-year-old – who has been named in the Scotland squad for this summer’s European Championship – having made just eight starts across all competitions in 2020/21.
Newcastle are keen to strengthen in midfield following the success of Joe Willock’s loan spell with the Magpies over the second half of the campaign, the Arsenal youngster scoring eight goals following his winter window arrival, including becoming the youngest ever player to score in seven consecutive Premier League games.
According to the Northern Echo, the Magpies are also amongst a number of Premier League clubs chasing a deal for Abraham, who has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge and set to depart.
The England international has struggled for opportunities since Tuchel’s arrival as manager and will leave in search of first-team football, with Wolves, Aston Villa and West Ham also amongst his list of admirers.
Chelsea are keen to sell the 23-year-old to raise funds for their own recruitment this summer, though it appears unlikely any side will meet their £40m asking price in the current climate.
The west Londoners will have to significantly drop those demands to sell the forward, though Newcastle are hopeful of securing a loan deal should no permanent offers arrive for Abraham.
Premier League rules state teams can not loan multiple players from the same club in a season, meaning the Magpies’ will be able to sign either Gilmour or Abraham on a temporary deal, and not both players.
