Newcastle ‘make approach’ for Jacob Ramsey

Newcastle have made an approach to sign Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Ramsey is attracting interest from a number of clubs in the closing stages of the window with Spurs and Bayern Munich also admirers of the 22-year-old, who has established himself as a key figure since progressing from the academy ranks at Villa Park.

The midfielder has won Aston Villa’s Young Player of the Season award in each of the last two campaigns and the u-21 European Championship with England in the summer. However, he has made just four Premier League starts this season after missing the start of the campaign with a foot problem.

The Athletic are reporting that interested clubs believe Villa could be tempted into a sale, should an offer arrive in the region of £50m. Villa need to raise funds to ‘remain compliant’ with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, before the end of June.

Newcastle have approached Villa over a deal, though the Magpies look unable to agree a deal unless a significant sale is made this month.

Eddie Howe’s side, who posted losses of £73m for the 2022/23 season, have reached an agreement with Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab to sell Miguel Almiron in a bid to raise funds.
