Newcastle ‘working on’ deal to sign Chelsea left-back

Newcastle are interested in signing Lewis Hall from Chelsea and are working on a deal to sign the left-back.

Eddie Howe is targeting more signings as Newcastle prepare to return to the Champions League this season and has made the arrival of a left-back a priority before the deadline.

The Magpies have been linked with Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney, but The Athletic are reporting that Newcastle are pushing to sign Hall after a number of rejected approaches already this summer.

The 18-year-old had been subject of a loan approach from Crystal Palace and Chelsea’s preference had been for Hall to move across the capital on a temporary deal, but interest from Newcastle has complicated that deal with the defender ‘favouring’ a permanent exit.

Hall – who can also play in central midfield – grew up a supporter of Newcastle due to his father’s North East roots and is keen on the prospect of signing for the club and competing in the Champions League next season.

Chelsea value the teenager at around £35m and would demand a substantial sell-on clause in any sale. The west Londoners are well stocked at left-back, with Marc Cucurella and Ian Maatsen offering alternatives to first-choice Ben Chilwell.
