Eddie Howe has confirmed that Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak will miss Newcastle’s trip to face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League this weekend.
Gordon suffered an ankle problem during the 4-4 draw with Luton last weekend and was substituted at St James’ Park. Howe has revealed that the winger has not trained this week, though the Magpies are optimistic of a swift recovery.
The Newcastle boss also confirmed that Alexander Isak will miss the trip to the City Ground. The Swedish striker went off injured in the win at Aston Villa last month but his issue is ‘not as serious’ as first feared.
“[Anthony Gordon] hasn’t trained this week, we don’t think it’s serious, hopeful to be back sooner rather than later. Not at this moment, it’s unclear,” Howe said at his pre-match press conference.
“[Alexander Isak] won’t make this game. Hopefully he won’t be too far away, but he doesn’t have a fixed return date. His injury is not as serious as we first feared.”
Howe also discussed Dan Burn’s recent form and launched a defence of the full-back after recent criticism of his performances.
“I understand as it’s football and everyone has an opinion, Dan has been such a big player for us in many ways.
“He is pivotal to how we play without giving too many tactical things away. He was such a big miss, he’s such a huge leader, huge presence physically and in leadership. He’s been an incredible signing for me and much better than I had hopes.
“He helped galvanise the players and I can’t speak highly enough of him. He’s been a huge player for us. He’s never lost the love and enthusiasm for the club, he’s Newcastle through and through.”
