Miguel Almiron is set to sign for Newcastle United from MLS club Atlanta United for a reported club record fee of £20 million.
The 24-year-old midfielder is expected to complete a medical on Wednesday or Thursday once personal terms are agreed upon, according to the Guardian.
The deal will break Newcastle‘s long-standing record transfer fee, which has stood since Michael Owen’s £16.5m move from Real Madrid back in 2006.
Almiron was one of the key players in Atlanta’s maiden MLS Cup triumph last season, scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists on their way to beating Portland Timbers in the final.
Rafael Benitez wants the 12-times capped Paraguayan international to be the new creative force in the Magpies midfield, which has struggled to create chances this season.
The Newcastle manager is also hoping to make two loan signings before the end of the transfer window, with Benfica’s Andreas Samaris and Monaco’s Antonio Barreca being linked with a move to St. James’ Park.
