Gary Neville believes Liverpool are still the team most likely to challenge reigning Champions Man City for the Premier League crown this season.
However, Neville has dismissed Maurizio Sarri and Unai Emery’s sides as genuine contenders and the former Manchester United defender insisted that the strength of Liverpool’s defence makes them City’s main challengers.
”My view is that the back four of Liverpool have proven themselves today – they didn’t need to because they’ve done well in the last six-to-12 months but today was another test for them,” he told Sky Sports Gary Neville Podcast following the 0-0 draw with between Liverpool and City.
“You always say champions win or pick points up when they’re not playing well, Liverpool aren’t at their best at the moment.
“The front three aren’t at their best. Today they weren’t at their best. Penalty aside, Virgil van Dijk was incredible and the rest of the defence is doing well as well.
“[Andy] Robertson looks confident, [Joe] Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, [Dejan] Lovren’s come in – they’ve got good options. Liverpool can be happy with a clean sheet.”
