Neville compares ‘monster’ Van Dijk to Manchester United legend

Gary Neville has compared Liverpool centre-back Virgil Van Dijk to legendary Manchester United defender and fellow Dutchman Jaap Stam.

Van Dijk became the World’s most expensive defender last January when Liverpool paid Southampton £75 million to bring him to Anfield.

The 27-year-old slotted straight into Jurgen Klopp’s side and his commanding displays at the back played a massive part in the Reds reaching the Champions League final last May.

Former Manchester United defender Neville has been massively impressed by the Dutchman since he moved to Anfield, and even admitted that he may have underestimated just how good Van Dijk actually is.

“I thought Van Dijk was a good player at Southampton, but I didn’t think he was worth £75m, and I didn’t think he would have the impact on Liverpool’s defence that he’s had,” he told the Gary Neville podcast.

“He’s a monster, and is looking a bit like Jaap Stam. It looks like he just throws people out of the way.”
