Jose Mourinho has sensationally described Alexis Sanchez as ‘cheap’, despite the Arsenal man having already earned £450,000 during his first week as a Manchester United player.
The Chilean completed his move to Old Trafford on Monday evening, in a deal which saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move in the opposite direction in what was a straight swap deal. No money changed hands due to the contract situation of Sanchez, who had just six months remaining on his deal at Arsenal.
He made his debut on Friday night in United’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Yeovil Town, making two assists in the process.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho was asked if Sanchez was already repaying his exorbitant wages, to which the Portuguese quipped that he thought he was actually ‘cheap’:
“He was cheap, wasn’t he?
“Free transfer, he was free. So for that price, it’s fantastic.
“I think everybody thinks the same in this country, I think everybody has to agree he is a fantastic player and the team that bought him has a plus.
“We have a good group of attacking players, you could see today we played with three of them and Lingard was on the bench, Lukaku was on the bench, Zlatan at home, Martial at home. So we have a good group and his quality is a plus and his experience is another plus.”
