Mourinho eyes cut-price move for potential Juan Mata replacement

Manchester United have joined the race to land Aleksandr Golovin according to reports today.

It’s going to be a pretty big summer for Jose Mourinho as he tries to claw back some of the immense 19 point gap opened up by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City this season.

While Mourinho is expected to spend big once again, a number of his squad could be shown the Old Trafford exit door in order to free up some funds and space in the squad.

While Michael Carrick has retired, and Marouane Fellaini is expected to leave on a free, the likes of Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind, and Luke Shaw are all thought to be surplus to requirements.

Two other players that could be allowed to leave are fan favourites, Anthony Martial and Juan Mata. While Martial has lit up the Premier League at times with his pace and skill, the arrival of Alexis Sanchez and his up-and-down form could see United cash in.

Juan Mata meanwhile has been more of a peripheral figure this season, especially since Mourinho seemingly settled on a 4-3-3 formation towards the end of the campaign.

If the Spaniard does end his four-and-a-half year association with the club, then his potential replacement could be CSKA Moscow attacking midfielder Aleksandr Golovin, according to The Sun.

The Russian has been linked with moves to a number of Premier League clubs, but any interest from United would blow any other interested party out of the water, especially considering he is valued at just £15 million.

What makes the story more intriguing is that Jose Mourinho was spotted watching the 22-year-old in action earlier this week in a pre-World Cup friendly against Austria. While many assumed Mourinho was watching Marko Arnautovic in action, another player who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, the report claims that he was also checking out the young Russian talent.

Mourinho was also able to take a look at Golovin earlier this season in the Champions League when CSKA were drawn in United’s group.
