Manchester United Jose Mourinho just couldn’t resist the chance to stick the boot into his old rival Arsene Wenger after his own side consolidated their own top four hopes with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea last Sunday.
Arsenal have come in for some heavy criticism after their dismal performance against Man City in the Carabao Cup Final, just hours after the game at Old Trafford. The Gunners face Pep Guardiola’s superb side again this Thursday in the Premier League, and Mourinho was quick to point out that unless Wenger’s men win, there hopes of finishing in the top four are all but over.
The Portuguese coach admitted that the three spots behind runaway league leaders City, will go any of the ”very good,” teams currently occupying second to fifth in the table, Man United, Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea.
“The top one is there and will be there,”
“Arsenal really needs to win against City in the next Premier League match or then the distance will be too big for them.
“After that, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and us, we are four very good teams, all fighting to be in the quarter-final of the Champions League.
“That shows the dimension of the league, but from the four of us somebody has to be out.”
Arsenal currently sit 10 points behind fourth placed Spurs, and after their shockingly poor showing at Wembley, it would be a brave man who bets on them overcoming that deficit with just 10 games remaining this season.
