Monk: My team are ‘complete’ underdogs in second city derby

Birmingham City manager Garry Monk has taken the pressure away from his side ahead of this weekend’s second city derby by claiming that they are ‘complete’ underdogs.

Monk’s men head into the game just one spot behind city rivals Aston Villa, but insists that his side are firmly the underdogs heading into the game.

The former Swansea City manager believes that the Blues’ rivals have far superior quality in their side at this moment in time.

“We are complete underdogs, they are favourites with every single bookmaker, everyone expects them to win, “ Monk told his pre-match press conference.

“The squad they have, the expectations people had of both clubs at the start of the season, we were expected to be avoiding relegation, they were expected to get automatic promotion to the Premier League.

“There might not be much difference in the table but if you look in terms of expectation, what investment has gone into the squads – what both teams should and shouldn’t be doing.

“They have a huge talented squad, everything is against us, we are the underdog there is no getting away from that, everyone says it.

“But we have managed to overcome a few odds this season against teams that are supposedly promotion favourites.

“We have managed to acquit ourselves well in those games and we need to do the same again this weekend.

“I wouldn’t say there is no pressure but everything is favoured for them so we have to go there and try and overcome that.”

However, Monk will be hoping his charges can go into the game with a sense of belief and upset the odds.

They make the short trip to Villa Park on Sunday for a 12pm kick off.
