Mind-boggling stats from Erling Haaland’s Champions League career

Erling Haaland continues to break records at a remarkable rate, with the Manchester City forward at it again with a devastating Champions League performance this week.

Haaland scored FIVE goals as Manchester City thrashed RB Leipzig 7-0 to reach the quarter-finals, continuing his incredible record in the competition.

Haaland has made Europe’s top tournament look effortlessly easy since bursting onto the scene and following his latest goalscoring blitz we’ve decided to look at some of the most mind-boggling stats from his Champions League career to date.

  • Haaland has become the fastest player to reach 30 goals in the Champions League, beating the record previously held by Ruud van Nistelrooy (34 appearances). He had earlier been the fastest player to reach 20 goals in the competition (14 appearances), taking that record from Harry Kane (24 appearances).
  • Ruud van Nistelrooy currently holds the record as the fastest player to 40 Champions League goals (45 appearances) and 50 Champions League goals (62 appearances). Haaland has 19 games to score the seven goals required to beat the former record and 36 games to score the 17 goals needed to beat the latter.

  • The Norwegian is also the youngest player to have reached 30 goals, achieving the feat aged just 22 years and 236 days. He has done so 116 days younger than Kylian Mbappe, with Lionel Messi, Raul and Karim Benzema rounding out the youngest five.

  • He is the youngest player to have ended a season as the Champions League’s leading scorer (2020/21) and is the only player to score 10+ goals in each of their first two seasons in the Champions League.

  • Haaland’s five goals against Leipzig saw him become just the third player to score five goals in a Champions League fixture, alongside Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano. He and Messi are the only players to have done so in a knockout fixture, with both having also scored a first-half hat-trick.

  • Haaland has now scored 33 goals in the Champions League, with only 18 players having ever scored more in the Champions League era. Just 23 players have scored more than the Norwegian in the history of the European Cup.

  • Haaland’s haul means he has now outscored some iconic names in the Champions League. Among them include: Samuel Eto’o, Wayne Rooney, Kaka, David Trezeguet, Patrick Kluivert, Luis Suarez, Rivaldo, Robin van Persie, Romario, Marco van Basten and Ronaldo Nazario.
  • Haaland has averaged 1.32 goals per game in the Champions League. It is the highest ratio in the history of the European Cup/Champions League among player to have scored 24+ goals. Haaland’s average is more than double that of Kylian Mbappe (0.62) and Karim Benzema (0.60), with Gerd Muller (0.97) the closest to the 22-year-old. The competition’s record scorer Cristiano Ronaldo has averaged 0.77 goals per game, while Lionel Messi’s ratio is 0.79.

  • Haaland has represented three different clubs in the Champions League and has averaged better than a goal per game for each of them. Red Bull Salzburg (8/6), Borussia Dortmund (15/13) and Manchester City (10/6).
