Pochettino says Chelsea aiming for ‘something special’

Mauricio Pochettino has said that Chelsea are aiming to do ‘something special’ under his management after the club’s thrilling 4-4 draw with Manchester City.

For the second time in six days the west Londoners were involved in a Premier League classic, as eight goals were evenly shared in an end-to-end contest with the champions at Stamford Bridge.

Thiago Silva, Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson were all on target for Chelsea, but Rodri’s late goal looked to have won it for the visitors after the Spaniard’s strike made it 4-3 in the final minutes. Chelsea, however, levelled in stoppage time as Cole Palmer converted a penalty against his former team to earn the Blues a deserved point.

Pochettino reflected on a pulsating game at full-time and believes Chelsea’s impressive performance has set a blueprint for how his team need to play.

“That is why we always say the Premier League is the best in the world,” he said to Sky Sports.

“We want to do something special here and this is how we need to play. We scored four goals against the best team in the world. It’s good to go into the international break like this.

“The approach of the game was good. We were brave. That is the idea of football. I am so proud and happy. The players never gave up. The reaction of the players was amazing.

Palmer’s penalty continued an excellent start to the season for the 21-year-old, who has flourished amid regular first-team football at Chelsea. His recent performances have sparked conversation of an England call up and Pochettino hailed the ‘playmaker’ of his side.

“He is a player that understands the game and used the half positions. He always gives the option to play and find the free man. He is a playmaker that links other things and makes the team look good.”
