Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba proved many of his critics wrong with a man of the match performance during his sides superb 3-2 victory over local rivals Man City on Saturday.
Jose Mourinho’s men trailed 2-0 at half-time after an abysmal first-half showing, and it looked like United fans worst nightmare was about to come true and Pep Guardiola’s side were going to secure the Premier League crown by beating their local rivals.
However, Pogba emerged a different player in the second period and probably for the first-time since his then world record transfer back to Old Trafford from Juventus in the summer of 2016 the France international grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and inspired his team to an unlikely victory.
The 25-year-old netted a well taken brace early in the second-half, before defender Chris Smalling struck the winner late on to secure a famous victory for the Red Devils.
Speaking after the game United midfielder Nemanja Matic admitted that Pogba has the ability to become his sides key player.
“With his personality Paul can [drive us on]. He needs to be our main player because when he plays in that position he needs to resolve the games and he needs to take responsibilities. Don’t forget he had some injuries this season and that he had three months out, and it is not easy to come back after that.” Matic told MUTV.
“People expect a lot from you when you play for United. We know this is normal but he is still young and can improve and [against City] he showed character and personality, and if you saw him in the last 10 minutes he fought a lot for the team and I hope he will continue like this.”
