Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has said that even if he and his teammates lift the FA Cup, it would not make it a successful season.

United made it through to the FA Cup semi-finals after defeating Brighton on Saturday, with Matic grabbing a goal and an assist. The Red Devils currently sit in second in the Premier League, which if it can be maintained, would be their highest finish since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, last weeks last-16 Champions League exit has seen Jose Mourinho criticise a number of his players as he looks to get them playing some kind of acceptable football.

Asked if the FA Cup could save United’s season, Matic replied: “I think no. If we win the FA Cup it is good, but not perfect.

“You have four competitions in the season – if you win one for me it is not enough, but you always have to do your best.

“In the Premier League, when you are in the first four this is not perfect but is good to play for the Champions League next season.

“If you win the FA Cup I cannot say it is a successful season, but it’s a good season.”
