Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic has branded Andre Onana ‘one of Manchester United’s worst-ever goalkeepers’ in response to the latter’s criticism of the French side.

Manchester United face Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tomorrow night. Ahead of the clash, Onana called the Red Devils huge favourites and said United were were “way better” than Lyon – despite their struggles in the Premier League this season.

Matic has hit back at Onana’s comments, which have been deemed as disrespectful ahead of the tie. The Serbian, who spent five seasons at Manchester United between 2017 and 2022, did not pull any punches when issuing a response.

Discussing Onana, he called the Cameroonian ‘one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history’ and urged the 29-year-old to focus on his own game.

“To say that, you need to have cover for something like that. I respect everyone but if you’re one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history then you need to take care of what you are talking about,” said Matic at a pre-match press conference ahead of the clash.

“If David De Gea, Peter Schmeichel or Edwin van der Sar said that I would question myself but if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s modern history, he needs to show that before he says it.”
