Manchester United vs Arsenal – Premier League Match Preview

Arsenal travel to an out-of-sorts Manchester United as they continue their title charge.

Arsenal remain embroiled in a tight title race with Manchester City and know that a win this weekend guarantees the Premier League will be decided on the final day of the season.

Manchester United have slipped out of the European places after a poor run of form that leaves them scrambling to pick up enough points in their remaining three games to reclaim sixth or seventh spot.

Here’s everything you need to know about the fixture.

Manchester United: DWWDL

Just a few months ago Man United were in the running for a Champions League place, battling the likes of Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur for fourth spot in the Premier League.

However, an up-and-down 2024 has led the Red Devils to drop into the battle for the remaining European positions. United relinquished their grasp on the top seven on Monday night following a damaging 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

Their inconsistency has been very much consistent, but there’s been more bad than good of late. Erik ten Hag’s team have won just two of their last 10 league matches and one of the last seven.

The FA Cup could provide solace, and European qualification, if the Red Devils can beat Manchester City at Wembley on May 25.

Bruno Fernandes remains a doubt after missing the defeat at Palace through injury. Harry Maguire is out, though Scott McTominay, Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez could all return.

Arsenal: LWWWW

Arsenal remain in contention for a first Premier League title in two decades, though know their fate is out of their own hands.

Having missed out on the title to Manchester City in agonising fashion last season, the North Londoners will hope 2023/24 does not end in a repeat.

Arsenal know maximum points from their remaining two games are required, with the Gunners needing to be in a position to capitalise should City drop points in the run-in.

They’ve won 14 of their 16 league games this calendar year, and have kept 10 clean sheets in that time. Four consecutive Premier League wins have seen Arsenal bounce back in. style from defeat to Aston Villa and a disappointing Champions League exit to Bayern Munich.

Last weekend, they comfortably saw off AFC Bournemouth with goals from Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Declan Rice.

Arsenal continue to have a clean bill of health and Jurrien Timber could return for first time since the opening day of the season.

Previous Meetings

In the reverse fixture back in September it was Arsenal who came out on top. An early goal from Marcus Rashford for Manchester United was cancelled out by Martin Odegaard just one minute later.

The Gunners struggled to break down the visitors, until two stoppage-time goals saw the North Londoners snatch a dramatic win. Declan Rice’s deflected effort proved to be the winner in the 96th minute, before Gabriel Jesus scored another on the break to complete the win.

The two giants of English football have met 239 times. There’s a long history between the two, and the head-to-head is pretty equa, with Manchester United winning 101, and Arsenal 88.

On a positive note for the Red Devils, they’ve won their last two home games against the Gunners, scoring three goals on both occasions. In their last five meetings, there have been four or more goals in every contest.
