Manchester United to make huge loss as forgotten man nears exit

Donny van de Beek is set to sign for Girona next week as the midfielder nears a permanent exit from Manchester United.

Van de Beek has endured a torrid time since he arrived at Old Trafford in a ยฃ35m deal from Ajax in 2020, with the 27-year-old having started just six games in the Premier League.

The Dutchman spent the second half of last season on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt but played just 349 minutes during an underwhelming spell in the Bundesliga.

Frankfurt declined the option to sign Van de Beek permanently and Manchester United have now accepted a bid from Spanish side Girona with an initial fee of just โ‚ฌ1m (ยฃ847,000). The deal will include ‘easy add-ons’ according to Fabrizio Romano, which could take the transfer to around โ‚ฌ5m (ยฃ4.2m).

His exit will bring an end to a disappointing time in English football after his highly-anticipated arrival from Ajax.

Van de Beek had starred as part of the Ajax team that reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2018-19 under Erik ten Hag, but the arrival of his compatriot as Manchester United failed to turnaround his fortunes with the club. Van de Beek also had a short loan spell at Everton in 2021-22.
