Manchester United star ‘sad’ after frustrating Palace draw

Andre Onana has said he is ‘sad’ after Manchester United were held to a goalless draw at Crystal Palace.

After scoring 10 goals in their last two fixtures in all competitions, the Red Devils drew a blank at Selhurst Park in a result that leaves Erik ten Hag’s team in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Ten Hag made a contentious call when he named the in-form Marcus Rashford on the bench and his players suffered from a mix of bad fortune and wastefulness around goal, hitting the woodwork on three occasions. At the other end, Onana was required to make a huge double save to preserve the visitor’s clean sheet. He got down low to thwart Eddie Nketiah, before springing up to deny Ismaila Sarr.

The Cameroonian reflected on the result at full-time and said United return home disappointed by dropped points in the capital.

“When you win, it is always a nice feeling, especially when you have the big players we have, the quality we have. I think today was a very important game for us to win, but I go back home sad because Manchester United, everywhere we go, we have to play good football,” he said to Sky Sports.

“We have to win, we have to be dominant. We have to create chances and we have to finish. Today, our guys did their best but didn’t put the ball in the net.”

Onana: Palace double save not my best

Onana was asked whether his double stop was the best of his career but admitted it means little to him following the failure to secure all three points.

“I don’t think it [his best save] is so important because we didn’t win. We are such a big club. When we move somewhere, we have the ambition to try to win. We didn’t win but I’m happy for the work, the sacrifice of my team-mates because I think we were better than them. We had so many chances but unfortunately, we didn’t score. It’s difficult to come back with one point when we deserved to win.

“Football sometimes, you can’t control everything. We were coming in, we had more chances and I had faith always in my guys. Today, we hit the crossbar twice and hopefully in the coming games, we will score a lot.”
