Manchester United’s new signing Fred will be one of the best midfielders in the world, according to his former manager Paulo Fonseca.
The Brazilian made the move to Old Trafford over one month ago, completing a £52 million move from Shakhtar Donetsk.
He was previously coveted by Manchester United’s local rivals Man City, although Pep Guardiola decided to fruitlessly chase Napoli midfielder Jorginho instead.
United fans are yet to see their new signing in action, with him still being on holiday after travelling to the World Cup with Brazil, although he didn’t see a single minute of action over in Russia.
He is due to join up with his new teammates on their tour of the USA next week, and speaking to the press in Portugal, Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca has said what United fans can expect from the 25-year-old:
“Fred will be, in short term, one of the best in the world in his position. He’s a unique player,” Fonseca told Portuguese newspaper, Record.
The Portuguese manager was also asked if he spoke to his compatriot José Mourinho before the transfer was closed: “No, I didn’t speak to José Mourinho.”
