Ruben Amorim has reportedly asked Manchester United to sign Al-Hilal midfielder Rúben Neves, whose contract in Saudi Arabia expires in the summer.

Neves has been placed on the club’s shortlist of options as Amorim looks to overhaul his midfield.

The former Wolves captain will be available on a free transfer in the summer, with no renewal reached at Al-Hilal as things stand.

He moved to Al-Hilal from the Premier League in a £47m deal in 2023 and has since made 112 appearances for the Saudi Pro League side. After a three-year stint in the Middle East, he is understood to be open to a return to England.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United believe the 28-year-old would be an astute addition, particularly on a fee transfer. Neves would need to take a sizeable cut on his current wages in Saudi Arabia, though that is not thought to be an issue.

United want to sign at least two central midfielders in the upcoming transfer windows, amid uncertainty surrounding Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte. Casemiro, who turns 34 in February, is also out of contract in the summer.

The Red Devils have interest in Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, though each would cost in excess of £60m.

A free transfer deal for Neves could help free funds to pursue another high-profile target, while adding an established option to their ranks. Neves would link up with Portugal teammates Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot at Old Trafford.
