Manchester United quoted £22m as the search for a midfielder continues

Manchester United have been told they must pay £22 million to sign Anderlecht midfielder Leander Dendoncker.

United have been keeping tabs on the 21-year-old for number of years, and are even believe to have watched the midfielder in action last Friday as the Belgian league season got underway.

The Red Devils have been linked with a number of midfielders this summer, including Nemanja Matic, Eric Dier and Fabinho – to name just a few.

Jose Mourinho is known to be frustrated at the lack of arrivals at Old Trafford this summer so far despite having already spent over £100 million on Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof.

He wants to sign a new defensive midfielder as a minimum, as well as a wide player if possible too, with Ivan Perisic strongly linked.

However, the Portuguese will be boosted by the news that Anderlecht are willing to listen to offers.

Speaking to Het Belang van Limburg, Anderlecht sporting director Herman van Holsbeek said:

“We want to cherish him, but if a club is willing to pay €25-35 million (£22-27m), we have a problem,

“Against Manchester United, he has shown twice that he has the potential to play at a top European club.

“‘We are lucky that the Champions League will not start until September, otherwise we’d have certainly lost him.

“We would like to see Leander here another year, to work together for a transfer next summer. Just as we did with [Youri] Tielemans.”

Dendoncker impressed in Anderlecht’s Europa League quarter final meeting against United last season, even scoring a wonderful header in what turned out to be a narrow defeat on aggregate.
