Manchester United offer Mata new deal

Manchester United have offered a new deal to out-of-contract star Juan Mata.

The Spanish midfielder’s current contract expires this month and he had looked set to follow Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia in leaving the club on a free transfer, however it is now understood the club have offered him an extension.

The 31-year-old, who joined United from Chelsea in £37m deal in 2014, is believed to have held talks with Spanish giants Barcelona over a proposed return to his homeland.

Sky Sports is now reporting that Manchester United have offered Mata a new deal as they bid to keep the playmaker at Old Trafford, with the former Valencia player having scored six goals in all competitions for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side last season.

United confirmed their list of released players this summer which as expected included the names of club captain Valencia and midfielder Herrera.

Valencia made just nine appearances last season and was not offered a new deal, whilst Herrera opted to leave the club and is believed to have agreed a deal to join Paris Saint-Germain, although no deal has yet been announced.

Several young players, including James Wilson, are also being released.
